Wind energy project (PIN)
The project will install wind turbines in the Kweneng District. The generated electricity will be supplied to the national grid.
Wind Edge Botswana will invest in a Wind Energy project to generate electricity in the Kweneng District of Botswana. The wind speeds in the project site average at least 6m/s at a height of 80m above the ground. These wind speeds are enough to drive modern wind turbines that span heights of 50-100m. The project will utilize 50 x 2MW large wind turbines giving an installed capacity of 100MW. With an assumed capacity factor of 0.24, the project will produce 210 GWh of electricity per year. The electricity generated by the turbines will be sold into the national grid and displacing electricity from Botswana’s coal thermal power stations thereby reducing GHG emissions mainly in form of CO2. The assumed turbine life span is 20years but that can be extended with proper maintenance. The project will be built on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis and will be transferred to the government of Botswana after 20 years and Wind Edge Botswana will retain 5% ownership after that.
